The leaders of the Venezuelan opposition, Maria Corina Machado and the president-elect Edmundo González Urrutiawere elected winners of the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. This was announced by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, during the plenary session in Strasbourg.
Machado was chosen “as leader of the democratic forces” and Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia “to represent all Venezuelans inside and outside the country who are fighting to restore freedom and democracy.” “Edmundo and Maria continued to fight for the restoration of freedom and democracy in the face of injustice, for a free, just and peaceful transition of power, and fearlessly defended these values so dear to millions of Venezuelans and to this Parliament: justice, democracy and the rule of law,” Metsola said.
“Parliament stands with the Venezuelan people, Maria and Edmundo, in their fight for the democratic future of the country. This prize is for them, and we are convinced that Venezuela and democracy will ultimately prevail,” concluded Metsola, also thanking the other candidates for the prize, the “Women Wage Peace” and “Women of the Sun” movements ( Israel-Palestine) and Professor Gubad Ibadoghlu, academic and anti-corruption activist in Azerbaijan.
