In this spectacle society, the absence of cameras in the courtroom has a lot to do with it. Despite the massive coverage of the continuous news channels, the audiences increased slightly but remained very far from the enormous interest generated by the trial of the fallen American football star OJ Simpson or that between the actor Johnny Depp and his former partner Amber Heard.

This disinterest is confirmed by polls. According to a survey conducted during the first half of May for Yahoo! and YouGov, only 16% of Americans said they were following this trial closely. But, counting the people listening to the debates with one ear, almost half of the respondents nevertheless followed this affair.

Probably the only one that will be held against the candidate before the November election, the New York trial also had limited educational value. The facts, and Donald Trump’s contempt for women, have been known for ages. Despite some memorable outings – “If this story was false, I would have written it in a way that made it much better,” said former porn actress and director Stormy Daniels – there are no no big revelation.

After being stuck in silence for six weeks in court – Donald Trump did not have the courage to testify – the defendant will undergo the ordeal of the verdict. The November 5 duel with Joe Biden will be played out in a pinch. It would be presumptuous to downplay the impact of a conviction or acquittal, let alone the possibility of an appeal. But the weariness of Americans undeniably works in favor of Donald Trump, also indicted for the attack on the Capitol and the concealment of secret documents. These cases are much more serious and important for the future of the country. These legal setbacks would have disqualified any other candidate. Not Donald Trump. Not in such a polarized climate in the United States.
