A knife attack injured at least three people in the Place Jean-Jaurès metro station on line B of the TCL network in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon (Rhône) around 2:30 p.m. this Sunday, May 26, 2024.

An individual injured passengers with a bladed weapon, according to the first elements collected by news Lyon.

The attack allegedly took place in the metro, between the Debourg and Place Jean-Jaurès stations.

7:33 p.m.: The attacker subject to an OQTF since 2022

According to Fabienne Buccio, prefect of Rhône, the attacker in police custody was subject to an obligation to leave the territory (OQTF) since 2022 issued by the Vienne prefecture.

“He was followed in psychiatric hospitals in several departments. This person had a fairly serious psychiatric profile,” she explained during a press briefing.

The 27-year-old individual present illegally in the territory was being monitored by the Vinatier psychiatric hospital in Lyon but also by establishments in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, said the prefect.

6:36 p.m.: The suspect of Moroccan nationality and aged 27

“The suspect, of Moroccan nationality and aged 27, is unknown in the files. He was the subject of several hospitalizations due to psychiatric problems,” announced the Rhône prefecture in a press release.

Regarding his status, whether or not he is legally present on French territory, the prefecture neither confirms nor denies information stating his irregular status.

6 p.m.: A “terrible attack”, “thoughts of the victims”, “France cuts throat”

Bruno Bernardthe environmentalist president of the Metropolis and Sytral (which manages the public transport network) denounced a “terrible attack”.

5:47 p.m.: The Samu psychological unit activated

The Lyon Samu psychological unit has been activated, according to our information.

A local resident confided to news Lyon having seen “families leaving in tears” from the Jean-Jaurès metro station after the events.

5:30 p.m.: Four injured and one person in shock

Two people were injured in a “relative emergency”, one of whom was in shock. Two people are in “absolute emergency”, including a minor who is being monitored by the social services of the City of Lyon and transported by drop-off to the Edouard Herriot hospital.

5:20 p.m.: Passengers attacked in the metro train

According to our information, the stabbed passengers were attacked in a metro B train, between Debourg and Place Jean-Jaurès stations. The metro train was traveling in the direction of Hôpitaux Sud Saint-Genis-Laval/Charpennes.

The man was reported to be behaving suspiciously on the subway while handling a knife. The metro then stopped at Jean-Jaurès station, after the attack, and the individual was arrested by the police.

5:12 p.m.: The suspect, aged 27 and known to the police

A police Source states that the arrested suspect is 27 years old and known to the police for common law crimes. The individual was arrested without difficulty at the Jean-Jaurès metro station.

He did not mention religious or political demands when stabbing his victims, according to initial evidence.

5:05 p.m.: No vital prognosis involved

5 p.m.: The suspect had a switchblade knife

According to our information, the suspect committed the attacks with a switchblade type knife. Before his arrest by the Bac police, he allegedly tried to get rid of it. The metro’s video surveillance cameras made it possible to confirm that the man arrested was the author of the stabbings.

4:55 p.m.: Jean-Jaurès station not served

Until at least 5:30 p.m., according to TCL, the Jean-Jaurès station of metro B is no longer served due to “a police intervention”. The rest of the line runs normally.

4:42 p.m.: At least three injured, including two in absolute emergency

According to two sources, the prefecture and a Source close to the file consulted by news Lyon, there are three injured and one person shocked in this knife attack. Three metro passengers are injured after being stabbed, the fourth person treated by emergency services is not injured but only shocked.

The deputy mayor of Lyon in charge of security Mohamed Chihi mentions “three people injured” and announces that the author has been “arrested”, which is also confirmed by the prefecture. “The author was arrested. The City of Lyon condemns this particularly serious act,” the elected official announced on X (formerly Twitter) this afternoon.

“Thank you to the national police for their rapid intervention. Respect the security perimeter and avoid the area,” added the prefecture.

The suspect, whose profile and motivations are unknown at this stage, was arrested by BAC police officers after the incident.
