Meeting with the Iranian filmmaker, Special Jury Prize with “Seeds of the Wild Fig Tree”, very critical of the regime. The one who has been making “clandestine cinema for twenty years” recounts the genesis and forced creation of this “almost documentary” film which forced him into exile and which he had to finish remotely before Cannes during his crossing of the border.

Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof answered questions from Release the morning after the climb of stairs and the gala screening of his film, seeds of the wild fig tree. How can such a film be made in Iran today?

It was a huge gamble, a real poker move. In Iran, there is always a factor of luck, the possibility that it will work or not, that we can complete the project or not. There are many sources of surveillance, the police, the secret services, who have different ways of putting you under pressure. I have been working in clandestine cinema for twenty years, I have learned to outwit them, and know how to divert their attention and escape their vigilance.
