FASHION – Take out the polo shirts and pleated skirts. This spring-summer, tennis is in fashion, and not just on the courts of Roland-Garros. Since the release of the film Challengers by Luca Guadagnino with Zendaya on April 24, the “tenniscore” trend is omnipresent on social networks and in the streets. And the actress Dune has a lot to do with it.

Throughout the promotion of the film, she played the tennis card to the fullest, wearing a series of looks day and night, inspired by sports skirts or the color of the ball. Her character Tashi Duncan in Challengers made some want to take their old racket out of the closet, and others to adopt the aesthetic of tennis, without ever hitting a ball, as shown in the video at the top of the article.

Because even if the looks partly copy the outfits of professional players, notably the pleated skirt and the sneakers/socks combo, the tenniscore silhouette is not really made for running on the courts (no player, even amateur, would recommend sweating in a cable knit sweater).

The men rely on polo shirts and fleece sweatshirts, and even a Gucci travel bag for those who want to play it like the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, eagerly awaited at Roland Garros this year. In terms of colors, we find a lot of white and beige in tenniscore, but also dark green and sky blue, close to the nuances of the “preppy” style.

“Tenniscore” is not new

As is often the case with fashion trends, it first appeared on the runways of luxury brands, such as at Dior and Miu Miu in 2022. Now, fast fashion has followed suit and tenniscore has become big audience.

Many brands are riding the success of Challengers to highlight their tennis-inspired collections, such as Skims, Kim Kardashian’s brand, or the model Hailey Bieber’s capsule for Fila. Even Lacoste, founded by tennis player René Lacoste, and Uniqlo, which dresses professional players, are proudly returning to their origins.

Some online fashion sites even compile clothing items under the “tennis core era” heading. On TikTok, “tenniscore” brings together more than 26 million videos to date, and no less than 17 million for “tennis core aesthetic” (“tennis core aesthetic” in French).

Users of the application share en masse ideas for outfits that are right on trend. Enough to give Roland-Garros spectators some inspiration before the start of the first round this Sunday, May 26. Because fashion is also, and above all, a sport that is played in the stands.
