Cannes Film Festival 2024: on the eve of the Palme d’Or, the Queer Palm awarded to the film by Emanuel Parvu (Photo of Romanian director Emanuel Parvu in Cannes for his film “Three Kilometers Before the End of the World” in competition at Cannes )

CANNES FESTIVAL – And the Queer Palm is awarded to…. Three kilometers to the end of the world. The film by Romanian Emanuel Parvu received this alternative prize on Friday evening, April 24, which rewards each year in Cannes a feature film addressing LGBTQI+ issues.

This film shows the ravages of homophobia in a country where only the beauty of nature relieves the weight of traditions. It tells the story of Adi, 17, who spends the summer in his native village nestled in the Danube Delta.

One evening, he is violently attacked in the street. The next day, his world is completely turned upside down, his parents no longer look at him as before and the apparent tranquility of the village begins to crack. Because the investigation into his attack reveals a homophobic motive.

Embodying Romanian society

In this drama, “I wanted to embody Romanian society so we have the church with the priest, the law with the policeman and the small society with the family. I wanted the mother to embody society in the broad sense and the father the sphere of the family”the director, also an actor, told AFP.

The Queer Palm jury this year was chaired by Belgian filmmaker Lukas Dhont (“Close”, “Girl”), which had to decide between 18 feature films in all sections combined.

Three kilometers to the end of the world is also in the running for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes festival, in competition against notably the musical comedy by Jacques Audiard, the film by Mohammad Rasoulof, presented at the risk of his life after his flight from Iran or even the testament of Francis Ford Coppola.
