Balearic Islands: four dead in the collapse of a bar-restaurant full of tourists

Four people died in the collapse of a bar-restaurant on the seafront of Palma de Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, on Thursday evening.

Sixteen others were injured, eight of whom are still hospitalized.

A drama while the party was in full swing. The collapse Thursday evening of a bar-restaurant located in Palma de Mallorca left four people dead in the very touristy Spanish archipelago of the Balearic Islands, where the season is already in full swing. “The victims are two German women aged 20 and 30, a Spanish employee aged 23 and a Senegalese man aged 44”, a police spokesperson told AFP on Friday. The two young German women were on vacation on the island while the Spanish employee of the bar-restaurant and the Senegalese man lived on the island. The latter made a lot of news about him in the local media in 2017 for having saved a swimmer from drowning.

Of the sixteen injured in this accident, eight, of Dutch nationality, are still hospitalized, declared the mayor of Palma, Antonio Jiménez. “They are out of danger”, he assured. A minute of silence was observed in the city at 10 a.m. this Friday.

Excess weight at the origin of the tragedy?

Authorities were seeking to determine the cause of the accident on Friday. According to them, the tragedy could have been caused by excess weight having caused the terrace of the Medusa Beach Club, which had just undergone work, to give way. “What we know for sure is that the first floor collapsed and caused the floor to collapse” from the ground floor to the basement, explained Eder García. “Everything suggests” that the collapse is linked to “the age of the structure and excess weight”, he continued.

This three-level building, located on the seafront in the tourist area of Playa de Palma, included a bar-restaurant on the first and ground floors, the Medusa Beach Club, and a basement bar, the CocoRico. The place was very busy at the time of the tragedy, while the tourist season is already in full swing in the Balearic Islands, an archipelago also including the islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.

Most victims found in basement bar

In a message published on social networks on Wednesday, the day before the tragedy, the Medusa Beach Club had promoted its “new rooftop”.

Fearing that other victims could have been trapped, firefighters searched for part of the night under the rubble, before ending the search. According to Eder García, Palma fire chief, most of the victims were found in the basement bar.
