New day of strike against the merger of public broadcasting

For the second day in a row, the Radio France antennas were disrupted on the morning of Friday May 24 due to a strike by staff in the public broadcasting sector. They oppose the flash merger project, on January 1, 2026, defended by the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati.

On Radio France, like Thursday May 23, the usual broadcasts were replaced by music, certain news flashes remained on -. On the television side, the - channel broadcast live, unlike the day before when it rebroadcast programs. A banner still specified: “Due to a call for a strike, we are unable to broadcast all of our programs. »

The Télématin show on France 2 was also live, with some rebroadcasts of sequences. France 24 also broadcast live. Several general staff meetings are to be held during the day, including a joint one at the Labor Exchange in Paris at 10 a.m.

The sector is called to strike against the public broadcasting merger project led by Rachida Dati. This project, however, fell behind schedule: its examination in the National Assembly, which was to take place on May 23 and 24, was postponed due to the congestion on the agenda. The text may not be examined until June.

Very busy first day

Thursday May 23, according to the management of Radio France, the rate of strikers stood at 33% for all employees, compared to 55% among journalists. The rate of strikers stood at 12% at France Télévisions. Concerns are particularly strong at Radio France, where there are fears that radio will be swallowed up by TV.

For “gather strength” of public broadcasting, Rachida Dati plans a transitional phase with a common holding company on January 1, 2025, then the merger a year later. Some 16,000 employees are affected. In addition to France Télévisions and Radio France, the juggernaut would also include Ina (National Audiovisual Institute) and France Médias Monde (RFI, France 24). The integration of this last group, however, is debated even in the presidential camp. Within these four public companies, fears are acute for resources and jobs.
