VSIt is written in the Chartrons skatepark regulations: “For safety reasons, it is prohibited to use the site in the event of rain, when the surface is wet. » It would be too risky. A slip happened so quickly. For the passage of the Olympic flame in Bordeaux, on May 23, the twenty-four skateboarders who were to make a return trip to the Quai des Chartrons at around 7 p.m., all on skateboards, plus a “little show” of two minutes, together, on the skatepark of the same name, had to deal with the worst possible weather conditions.

Their captain, Vincent Milou, who had the honor of carrying the flame on this stretch, is an experienced champion. The Landais finished fourth in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in the street event. Despite the downpours that fell on Bordeaux, he always showed Olympian calm. At 3:30 p.m., he took advantage of a fragile clearing to organize, umbrella in hand, a briefing on the heights of the skatepark with the participants. Depending on the state of the sky at the time when the previous torchbearer handed over the torch, different scenographies were considered, in full or with reduced numbers. He proposed his ideas, but everyone had the right to speak. This permanent mix of levels, where candidates for the Olympic Games mix with training for beginners, is what makes this discipline so charming. However, the hours passed and the rain increased in intensity.

Three hours of activities and initiations concocted by the Bordeaux Skate Culture association had been scheduled from 2 p.m. at the skatepark, notably with middle school students. After 20 minutes, a heavy downpour emptied the place.

Three porters finally

The lull at 5:30 p.m. changed everything. Immediately, two rehearsals were organized at the last minute, while the helicopter assigned to the shots was approaching the course of Martinique, where Vincent Milou was to receive the flame. Surrounded by a guard of honor on skateboards, the captain of this collective relay made the final adjustments, in liaison with the Paris 2024 staff. “Don’t worry, there’s still a little time. »

In the end, everything ended perfectly, right on time, despite the threatening clouds. Watered all day, the skatepark floor proved usable at the hour. Its ability to dry quickly is one of the characteristics of the chosen coating, the remaining puddles being removed with a squeegee.

While only one flame bearer was announced, there ended up being three. In the skatepark, the torch was passed to Bordeaux native Benjamin Garcia, world street champion in 2017, and, to highlight women’s sport, to Lucie Schoonheere, who now lives and trains in Bordeaux. She is currently the first Frenchwoman and 22e world ranking in the Olympic street ranking, determining for qualifications for the Olympic Games. At 14, she is in a good position to qualify for Paris 2024. United by tradition, skateboarding became a team sport on May 23.
