In Palma de Mallorca, four dead in the collapse of a restaurant

Four people died when the roof of a restaurant collapsed on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca on Thursday May 23, emergency services said. “There are four dead and 16 injured”a spokesperson for the archipelago’s emergency services told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Friday morning, reducing the initial toll of around twenty injured.

Emergency services confirmed overnight on the social network ” very serious “ and new in condition ” severe “ and that they had “were transferred to different hospitals in Palma”the capital of the island of Mallorca.

Rescue services searched for part of the night in the rubble for fear that other victims could be trapped before ending the search. “We finished after doing the last research and we have confirmation of 20 victims, including four dead”declared Eder Garcia, the fire chief of Palma, on public television Balearic IB3.

The tragedy occurred late Thursday afternoon in the tourist area of ​​Playa de Palma, in the south of the city of Palma de Mallorca, when “the roof of a two-story building” housing a restaurant, collapsed, explained the spokesperson. It is located by the sea, on an avenue with shops and leisure establishments.

Reasons for collapse unknown

Technical services are due to travel to the site on Friday to determine the causes of the collapse of the building, located on Cartago Street in Playa de Palma. “The circumstances are currently under investigation” but “what we know for sure is that the first floor collapsed and caused the floor to collapse” of the ground floor on the “basement where we found the most victims”in the bar, Mr. Garcia explained.

In a message on X, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said he followed “up close the consequences of the terrible collapse that occurred on Palma beach”. The socialist leader has, moreover, “expressed his condolences to the families of those who died” and offered “all necessary means and personnel” of the central State to help the regional authorities in the management of this accident.

The president of the Balearic Islands region, Marga Prohens, declared “shocked by the information received about the collapse” and addressed his thoughts “to the families of the four people who lost their lives in this tragic incident”.
