Hair tied in a bun, pale complexion, clear voice sometimes choked with sobs. “There are things I’m accused of that I didn’t do,” begins Tiphanie Van Steen, almost 29 years oldin the dock with Jérémie Lecomte, 28 years old, and Jérôme Boucher, 40 years old.

This Thursday, May 23, 2024 is the first day of the trial before the Assize Court of Évreux (Eure) for assassination with premeditation and ambush by Angélina Dorléans in Morainville-Jouveaux, which will last until Wednesday May 29.

After researching on the Internet on ways to make a body and a car disappear, Tiphanie Van Steen invites the two men to her home on April 27, 2021. The day before, she asked SFR for a new SIM card for her ex’s line -companion Alexandre. She pretends to be him and asks by message to Angélina Dorléans, the latter’s new companion, then aged 26, to come to her house.

When he arrives, the two young women talk and then the accomplices come out of the bathroom. Jérémie Lecomte admitted having hit the victim with a piece of wood provided by Tiphanie Van Steen before strangling him to death. Around 11:45 p.m., firefighters and police were alerted to a car on fire in the Brétigny forest and discovered the body, charred, in the driver’s seat.

School bullying in adolescence

The first day of the trial was devoted to the study of the personalities of the accused, Who face life imprisonment. It revealed three fragile individuals, from disadvantaged social backgrounds and chaotic journeys.

Tiphanie Van Steen deplored a lack of signs of fatherly love and returned to his obesity as a teenager, underpinned by a genetic background. The young woman began a first diet at the age of 10 and due to lack of effectiveness, benefited from a sleeve (stomach reduction operation) at the age of 20, after which she went from 120 to 60 kg.

When he was young, his excess weight prevented him from riding horses. In middle school but especially in high school, she is the victim of harassmentas she reports:

‘The big one is coming, there is no room for her’; and mean looks, people looking at you from head to toe and judging you.

She repeated her 6th and 4th grades and did not obtain her professional baccalaureate in food sales advice at the agricultural high school of Tourville-sur-Pont-Audemer. The accused does several odd jobs (postwoman, saleswoman), notably as a versatile employee at the Ferme de la Houssaye.

She has a little girl with her ex

She becomes pregnant by Alexander and chooses to keep the child although he initially does not agree. She too focused on her daughter, he too often absent, they gradually drift apart and she breaks off the relationship after four years in December 2020. They will meet again for around twenty days from the end of March 2021.

Impacted by the deaths of her paternal uncle, of a friend “from a brain tumor” in 2020 then of her grandfather during his pre-trial detention, Tiphanie Van Steen is also disturbed by the existence of three half-sisters younger people that his family avoids talking about: “It destroyed my mother and my whole family. »

A former abusive relationship

On the marital level, the accused went out in 2012 with Jérémie Lecomte, then experienced another violent relationship. She testifies of domestic violence and two rapes at age 17.

He forced me to sleep with him twice. He had a tendency to squeeze my arms, he sometimes hit my arms and legs so that the bruises wouldn’t show.

Tiphanie Van Steen

The attorney general, Christophe Salort, criticizes him for not having mentioned this past violence in all his interrogations:

Every time you open your mouth, you say something different.

Christophe Salort, General Counsel

Among her faults, Tiphanie Van Steen recognizes jealousy and an “authoritarian” side. Her former mother-in-law called her “manipulative.” The accused denies having asked him for money.

“We will see later, the study of the facts will reveal another side of your personality,” anticipated Maître Vanessa Brat, lawyer for Angélina Dorléans’ mother. The accused wants to repent:

I participated in the death of a person who did nothing. The facts with which we are accused are something atrocious.

Tiphanie Van Steen

Having reconnected with her Christian religion in prison, she indicates “pray every day for Angelina”. The victim’s family is offended.

An ex-alcoholic willing to do anything for love

A few days before the assassination, the young woman called on her overly helpful first love, Jérémie Lecomte. He has already fallen in love again and remained so at the start of his incarceration. “For love, I committed an inexcusable act”he said to try to explain his gesture.

“I’m someone who doesn’t talk,” he mutters. In short sentences, Jérémie Lecomte, a “teddy bear” weighing 130 kg and 1.80 m tall in need of affection, retraces his journey. “Intellectually deficit family” from his own words and conflicting relationship with his biological father (they cut ties when he was 10). A brother and a sister with a mental disability, out of seven siblings.

A taste for football and alcohol who leaves little room for his companions. No diploma but temporary work and undeclared work in green spaces.

Is the Dozulé football club that the taciturn met Jérôme Boucher, with whom he regularly consumed alcohol from the age of 18. “They can be stupid and not stupid,” comment other members.

“I went very far into alcohol,” regrets Jérémie Lecomte. On June 26, 2018, an evening with friends goes wrong. Having thought he was joking, the young man will be condemned for aggravated violence, distribution and recording of intimate images and sexual assault on a vulnerable man suffering from a mental disability. He spent eight months in prison. “I’m ashamed,” he said.

The evening of Angélina Dorléans’ murder, he had not drunk. He addresses his family to “help them grieve”:

I destroyed your life, I no longer look at myself in the mirror the same, I have the hands of a murderer.

Jérémie Lecomte

A failing and deceitful father

Jerome Boucher, the last protagonist, who mainly helped transport the body, grew up in Calvados with a mother who rejected him, “not giving him kisses or hugs.” Suffering from a hearing and speech problem since birth, the 40-year-old says: “She said I was good for nothing. I slept outside a few times and was hit by objects: a broom, a wooden spoon…”

Employed in a supermarket, he starts a family but argues a lot with his partner, prefers to spend his free time playing football and often comes home drunk. Separation is coming. Jérémie Lecomte, one of his few friends, welcomed him for a year with his parents when he became homeless.

After the separation, he made those around him (including his children) believe that he met another woman and had a child who died. “Yes, I lied. » The reality is quite different: alcoholic, he can drink “easily two liters” of alcohol per day.

After the personality of the accused, the unfolding of the facts and their psychology will be studied by the court in this trial which continues this Friday, May 24.
