At 37, Olivier Giroud seems to be aware of his reality. In an interview with our colleagues from L’Equipe, the top scorer in the history of the Blues explained that he wanted to give way to young people after the Euro in Germany.

Euro 2024 will be Olivier Giroud’s last competition with the Blues. The one who will celebrate his 38th birthday next September will find himself on Sunday evening at the center of a documentary entitled ‘Giroud’ (broadcast on Canal + at 9 p.m.) and on this occasion, he spoke to our colleagues from L’Equipe. The top scorer in the history of the Blues has therefore made no secret of it: the tournament which will be played in Germany (June 14-July 14) will be the end of his adventure which began in 2011 with the national team. “To be honest, you have to say that this will be my last competition with the Blues. Obviously, I will miss it a lot. But I think that the French team will be finished after the Euro. We must give way to young people.”he highlighted, very happy to see N’Golo Kanté back in the selection with a view to the competition.

Giroud wants to go “as far as possible” with the new generation at the Euro

A decision which, obviously, was motivated by the desire not to have the “season too many”. And the top scorer in the history of the Blues (57 goals in 131 caps) to justify: “As I said, I also feel physical and mental fatigue. Raphaël Varane said it after the World Cup, and he’s right. I always said I was going to stop when my body asked me to. I think I have two good years left. But for the French team, in my opinion, it will be over“. So, obviously, this seventh international competition for him will be special and it will be vital not to let yourself be overwhelmed by emotion. “There is still a competition to win, even if it will be special for me,” said underlined a Giroud who will not have a quantified objective for the tournament, even if we obviously spoke to him about the 60 goal mark.

“It really is the desire to go as far as possible in the competition with this generation that drives me. If I win, apart from the Premier League which is very difficult to win, I could say that I have won everything…”, summarized Olivier Giroud “not out of step” with the new generation symbolized by Warren Zaire-Emery (18 years old).
