Wednesday gave a taste of summer temperatures thanks to the first 30 degrees of the year which registered on the thermometer in the mainland. When will you get temperatures like this again? Forecast.

During the day of May 22, several regions of the province came close to the first 30 degrees of the year and two regions (Gatineau and Montreal) reached it. The hottest point across Quebec was in Saint-Anicet, with 32.6°C mercury and a feeling of 39. On the Montreal side, a feeling of 37 was recorded. Note that this heat is approximately two weeks ahead of seasonal norms.

Is summer already here?

For the fifth consecutive year, the first 30 degrees were early in the greater Montreal area. “It’s a trend that’s becoming established,” observes meteorologist Kevin Cloutier. This phenomenon is therefore becoming more and more frequent.

But even if the mercury reaches such a temperature earlier than usual, is this the starting signal for the arrival of temperatures above 30°C? Not necessarily. In fact, the first 30°C this week will only have been a false start, since a long, rather cool sequence is taking shape for all of Quebec. This sequence, which will last a little over two weeks, will bring with it cooler temperatures than normal.

A drop in temperatures

From May 27 (next Monday), temperatures will begin to drop, reaching 17 degrees on May 30. From May 27 to June 2, temperatures will be below seasonal norms, oscillating between 17 and 22 degrees. They will then slowly stabilize from June 2. At this time, they will be around 22 degrees, which corresponds to seasonal norms for this time of year.

This drop in temperatures is explained by the departure of a crest and the arrival of a trough coming from the west of the country. This trough brings with it its share of precipitation and coolness, which will lead to a drop in temperatures and grayer weather. The beginning of June would be marked by a return of more comfortable temperatures, without speaking of great heat.
