Part of the newspaper’s summer series West France devoted to treasures, allegedly or not hidden in France here and there, the choice of independent journalist Nicolas Montard fell in particular on the famous legend of the golden virgin of Morthemer.

The precious help
by Patrice Boileau

“The underlying idea, beyond evoking the legend of the treasure, is also to talk about places to visit in the area, confides Nicolas Montard who was also interested in the fabulous story of Constable John Chandos, an English officer who died in 1369 in the church of Morthemer and whose body was never found. We have a selection on the national territory, such as the treasure of Gisors to the north of Paris, the walled painting by the painter David which is said to be in the castle of Saint-Fargeau in Yonne, and this famous story of the golden virgin by Morthemer that I spotted in 2018 during a file on legends that I wrote for the magazine I’m interested. »

To help him in his research, the journalist benefited from the precious help of Patrice Boileau, a native of the country and a very fine connoisseur of local history, including these legends which, even today, fascinate adventure seekers .
