Compact coupe SUV

2nd generation

From €46,600

After a first generation marketed in 2018 and whose career was mixed, the X2, the coupe version of the X1, is now available in a second opus, which radically changes compared to the previous one. The main novelty lies in the dimensions which increase from 4.36 m on the first of the name to 4.55 m, or an additional 19 cm.

Compared to the X1 from which it derives, the X2 is also 5 cm larger while its roof is lowered by 4 cm. Beyond its measurements, it retains its SUV coupe style with in particular a specific design at the level of the grille which can be illuminated with pointed angles, stretched headlights, a pronounced roof drop and above all large lights. which overflow onto the tailgate and fenders. Far from being unanimous, this X2 actually seems less balanced than its predecessor.

The dashboard is identical to that of the X1, except for some aluminum veneers.

The transformations are also very visible in the passenger compartment with the adoption of the same dashboard as the X1, which consists of a large double digital screen, 10.25-inch instrumentation and a multimedia system. /10.7-inch GPS. The operation of the latter turns out to be rather fluid and practical. We also find the large floating console, which overlooks plenty of storage space. There is nothing to complain about the quality of the materials of a good level, including in particular the aluminum veneers, which reinforces this impression.

There is room in the rear except for the headroom which is more limited.
Despite the coupe body, the trunk volume remains significant at 560 liters.

Good point regarding the practical aspects with a loading volume of 560 liters, even if you will have to deal with the falling roof, which can prove to be a handicap when transporting bulky objects. Be careful, however, with the high loading threshold.

Being very close to the There are nevertheless some differences with the abandonment, for example, of the entry-level 18i present on the X1, but also of the plug-in hybrid versions. Electric motors remain in the catalog.

BMW’s 2.0 i no longer means 6 cylinders, but three …

Despite everything and after testing the sporty M35i version and its zero-emission version, now it’s time for the X2 20i, which therefore constitutes the access version on this model. A little over 10 years ago, when you bought a BMW with this logo, you were entitled to a six-cylinder. Today, things have definitely evolved since you will have to make do with a simple 3 cylinder. Pollution standards have got the better of many noble engines and BMW is no exception to this rule. With a displacement of 1.5 l, it develops 170 hp and 280 Nm thanks to a 48-volt light hybridization, which does not allow it to run entirely electric, but by helping the thermal block in several situations and particularly in town. Restarts at the fire are smoother and less noticeable, because the 1.5 muted by hybridization is more discreet, both in terms of sound and vibrations. Once out of the city, the performance is sufficient without ever being extraordinary. No daily worries about overtaking or driving on highways, the 3-cylinder does its job, and quite well, but it still lacks a bit of brilliance. In terms of consumption, we noted during our test a fairly high average of 8.4l/100 km.

In terms of comfort, the X2 plays to the student who could do better. In this M-Sport finish, it is fitted with magnificent optional 21-inch rims. Perfect for filling the wheel arches well and looking after the aesthetics, but as expected this degrades comfort, particularly during connections or bleeds which are particularly felt despite the presence of an adaptive M suspension which lowers the ground clearance by 15 mm, while trying to maintain a good level of overall comfort. Finally, a good point for the effective soundproofing of air noise, which allows for relaxing trips. The same is true of behavior. The steering offers good consistency and allows the X2 to be placed easily in turns. However, it suffers from an increase in torque when you accelerate a little too hard, because you must not forget that this X2 is not propulsion, but traction. This also induces an understeer temperament, not very marked, but definitely present.
