Maintenance of security forces, operations to restore order, meeting on reconstruction and political meetings… The President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron made several announcements at the high commission this Thursday, in Nouméa, in front of representatives from the world economic and New Caledonian elected officials.

The head of theEtat first wanted to pay tribute with a minute of silence to the six people who have died since the start of the crisis ten days ago in New Caledonia. “I find myself before you with the ministers and the High Commissioner, in an extremely serious and heavy moment, the seriousness of which we all understand.“, indicates Emmanuel Macron.

The first thing is order, calm and peace“The tone is set, with a first announcement concerning security.”There will be 3,000 internal security forces in a short time. There are more than there were during the 3rd referendum. These forces will remain as long as necessary, even during the Olympic and Paralympic Games“, indicates Emmanuel Macron.

Another announcement made this morning: new operations “massive“are going to be scheduled.”The entire republican order will be reestablished, because there is no other choice. The Minister of the Interior will meet the internal security forces. And the Minister of the Armed Forces will do the same. The Minister Delegate for Overseas Territories will lead a specific meeting on reconstruction“, explains the head of state.

At his side at the high commission: Marie Guevenoux, Minister Delegate in charge of Overseas Territories, Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories, Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of the Armed Forces, Louis Le Franc, High Commissioner of the Republic in New Caledonia. And the three members of the mission: Eric Thiers, Frédéric Pottier and Rémi Bastille.

Concerning the state of emergency declared in the territory, the President of the Republic assures: “the situation justifies it“, but “think it should not be extended“.”I am here because dialogue is necessary, but I call for responsibility. It will only be lifted if everyone here calls for responsibility and the lifting of the barriers“, assures Emmanuel Macron.

The Head of State is meeting today with representatives of the Caledonian economic world and elected officials.

Concerning the political question, we need a “frank, direct, open debate on institutional and project issues“, insists the president. “We need to bring all stakeholders to the table. Appeasement cannot be a step back. The objective is for us to have a free and confidential debate between us. I count on everyone’s spirit of responsibility. We will get there, because New Caledonia deserves it“.

The debates were then opened, behind closed doors.
