The Dutchman, who had not won since the sprint race of the Austrian Grand Prix at the end of June, beat the Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), 2e.

His championship rival, Lando Norris, finished 3e. The Briton from McLaren, to whom second place seemed promised, made a driving error, which Sainz took advantage of on the last lap.

The other Ferrari, that of Monegasque Charles Leclerc, failed at the foot of the podium.

The two Mercedes follow, Georges Russell having beaten his British compatriot Lewis Hamilton, 6ethen the two modest Haas of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg, 7e et 8e.

In the championship, Verstappen scores eight more points and is now 54 ahead of Norris, who has six points.

The French from Alpine Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly finished outside the points, in the 14e et 15e places.
