Is the MG4 a real bargain used?

With its electric sedan, MG has made an impression. It is not thanks to its line, its performance or the quality of its finish, but rather by its unbeatable price/performance ratio. It’s simple, it even allows itself to defy thermal models. While being priced at rock bottom prices, starting at €28,990 in 2022 without the bonus, the MG4 gives value for money.

In addition, the brand had the good idea of offering a wide range with three finishing levels (Standard, Comfort and Luxury), two engines (125 and 150 kW), and above all three different batteries : 51 kWh (350 km range), 64 kWh (450 km) and 77 kWh (520 km). For the sake of image, MG launched a 435 hp XPower sports version at the end of last year!

In terms of equipment, It is hard to do better, especially at this price. The entry-level Standard already offers LED headlights, keyless access and start, rear parking sensors, level 2 autonomous driving, multimedia system with 10.25-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, or even seven-inch digital meters.

The MG4 is not the one with the best finish in the category, but at this price it is not difficult to accept it.

The Comfort level gives access to the 64 kWh battery, the leather steering wheel, the dark-tinted rear windows, the 11 kW on-board charger, the 17-inch rims, etc.

Finally, the Luxury version adds imitation leather upholstery, heated front seats, electrically folding mirrors, blind spot monitoring, 360° camera, but also a heat pump.

An MG4 from €19,000

On the second-hand market, the offer is comfortable, but not overwhelming. As we write these lines, around 190 advertisements appear on the La Centrale website.

The offer starts below €19,000. At this price, small battery MG4s are only offeredStandard examples from 2022 displaying approximately 15,000/20,000 km.

To benefit from a more comfortable range of action, via the 64 kWh battery, while benefiting from richer equipment (Comfort or Luxury), you have to put more money into your wallet since the MG4 starts just under the €24,000. Generally, the models offered date from 2023, but the mileages are more variable, between 7,000 km and sometimes more than 35,000 km.

Finally, the “long range” with the 77 kWh battery goes up another step with a minimum budget of €31,000 (2023 model and less than 10,000 km). To note that this version is very rare.

An interesting discount

During our last market study concerning used MG4s, we noted prices above what was available for new ones. The market has finally become reasonable since the entry level allows save around 24%, while taking into account the €5,000 discount granted by the network. An unusual figure in these times and which gives serious food for thought. As for the most widespread version, the Luxury 64 kWh, the gain here reaches 22%.

Only the 77 kWh version maintains a good rating with only 10% gain. Finally, the recent XPower sports car and its 435 hp only give up 5% in second hand.

Note also that when MG no longer applies its €5,000 discount on the MG4 range, these second-hand offers will mechanically be even more interesting.

A rather high-end offer

Taking a closer look at the ads, the high-end versions are the most represented. Thus, the Luxury finish represents 61% of the offer, followed by the Standard (21%), the XPower (13%) and the Comfort (5%).

In terms of batteries, the intermediate size of 64 kWh is by far the most popular with 74% of classified ads. The 51 kWh accumulator reached 21% and finally the 77 kWh battery obtained 5% of the votes.

Bottom line: an even more unbeatable MG4

For some motorists, buying a used car is inconceivable. Looking at the selling prices of this sedan, they might change their minds. For others, provided of course that you want an electric vehicle, the MG4 has seen its prices drop sharply in the space of just a few months. Recent and very often displaying reasonable mileage, the models offered are well-equipped versions equipped with the 64 kWh battery. Last point, MG guarantees its car for seven years or 150,000 km. Faced with such arguments, it is difficult to remain indifferent…
