The N51 construction site provokes strong reactions: “we risk a frontal accident”

Astonishment, anger, incomprehension, fear are all feelings that animated users of the N51 linking Boussu to Quiévrain this Tuesday and for good reason. A project to repair cycle paths has started. Alternating traffic is therefore put in place to allow workers to work in good conditions. The problem ? The lack of signage pushes motorists coming from both directions to… take the same lane. The risk of head-on collisions is therefore enormous, causing numerous outcries from citizens and road users. A construction site managed by the SPW… with the exception of signage…

Citizens have been going wild on social networks since Tuesday, the date the construction began. Many people criticize the dangerous situation caused by this construction site whose signage is absent. Everyone fears a tragedy on this road, already known for not being the safest in the region… “It’s really dangerous”, reports a citizen. “I missed a head-on accident this Monday”, adds a motorist. “We risk a head-on accident every time we pass that way”, also comments another resident.

On the SPW side, we are saying more about this project which should last several weeks. “This is a cycle path rehabilitation project. A budget of 380,000 euros is planned for this purpose. We started planing yesterday. This work will continue until Friday. Next week, the covering will be installed. We hope to be able to get through the drops to finish this work on Thursday. The week of June 3, we will finish the project by carrying out the ground markings”, indicates Sarah Pierre, spokesperson for the SPW MI.

In total, no less than seven kilometers of roads are impacted by the construction site. A significant distance which only increases the risks linked to the lack of safety of road users. When it comes to the issue of signage, the situation is less encouraging. “A company is responsible for the signaling which is, therefore, not our responsibility”, adds Sarah Pierre.

Who to vote for on June 9?

The Walloon Region cannot therefore resolve the problem pointed out by the region’s inhabitants. All that remains is to hope that the company in charge of the signaling takes matters in hand before a tragedy occurs on this road which has already seen others… In the meantime, caution is more than necessary. never a necessity, just like courtesy while driving in order to avoid any risk of accident.
