“Madam, I fo byin bought zignons po fé nout ti cari”. Onions, yes! But at what cost ? While several weeks ago, the price of tomatoes was slowly falling, an increase in the price of onions, coupled with a shortage, was noted on the markets. Last April, this essential ingredient for a good rougail sausage cost more than 8 euros per kilo (for those imported from Holland and Pakistan). A price not far from the 10 euros requested for a kilo of pei onions.

This Wednesday morning, at the Port fairground market, prices ranged from 3.60 euros for onions from China to 6.80 euros for those from Madagascar. For a kilo of onions from Pakistan, you had to pay 5 euros. According to Eric, a showman, we will have to wait until mid-June to see these prices change: “The Indian government has once again authorized the export of onions. This should allow prices to fall.”

Indeed, at the end of 2023, India banned onion exports in order to combat soaring prices on its domestic market. A ban, initially planned until March 31, 2024, but which has been extended. Next month, imports from India should therefore resume. Good news when we know that Reunion Island imports half of the 10,000 tonnes of onions consumed each year from India.

A little further on, we find the only fairground that offers pei onions: “We grow them ourselves. Normally at this time of year there shouldn’t be any, but these are onions that we planted out of season.” A product which, according to him, “worth the price” because it guarantees the quality and taste of a good curry.
