This is one of the announcements made by Christophe Béchu, this Wednesday, May 22. Visiting the Eastern Pyrenees, the Minister of Ecological Transition announced his resilience plan and the concrete projects which will soon be launched in the driest department in France. The government member also made several announcements.

Upcoming increase in water prices

Among them, information which should not necessarily rejoice the inhabitants of the Pyrénées-Orientales: water rates expected to increase over a major part of the territory, announced Christophe Béchu, who came to “send a message of frankness, mobilization and optimism”.

The Minister of Ecological Transition explained that water prices in the Pyrénées-Orientales were generally lower than the national average.

“There are already efforts that have been made here in certain territories, with water prices above the average, and leak rates below the national average. Proof of a correlation between these different subjects,” Christophe Béchu then explained to the press.

Finance pipes and reduce leaks

To justify this future increase in the price of water in the Pyrénées-Orientales, Christophe Béchu announced the need to finance underground networks. Last year, thirteen communities were identified as ” black dots “with more than 50% water leaks potable via the pipes.

“The work in the pipes is thankless, because it is not visible and is expensive. But if we do not carry out this work, there is no future,” recalled the minister, before continuing:

In the department, the leakage rate is high and the investment rate is low. To combat leaks, it will be necessary to give more resources to water services and this means increasing the price of water in the sectors concerned a little, not across the whole of the Pyrénées-Orientales.

“A few euros per month”

Earlier today, he announced on France Blue Roussillon a future increase of 20 to 30% in prices, or “a few euros per month”. “It’s a small investment, but then it avoids huge expenses. Go and ask those who are obliged to go and stock up on mineral water,” recalls the member of the government.
