The 2024 national inventory report, submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is based on 2022 data and highlights a notable reduction of 34.5% in GHG emissions compared to to 1990 levels, with total emissions recorded at 66.53 kt CO2 equivalent.
This reduction is attributed to several factors, including a decrease in fuel consumption in the transportation and construction sectors, as well as an increased use of biofuels. However, the building sector, mobility and waste management remain the main sources of GHG emissions in the Principality.
Monaco has also made significant progress in energy management, with 65.5% of its energy consumption coming from renewable sources in 2022. Renewable electricity, notably hydroelectric power, represented 43% of the total energy consumption of the country. These developments are part of the government’s Climate, Air and Energy Plan, which aims to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990.
In addition to efforts to reduce emissions, Monaco is also focusing on climate adaptation. Initiatives include urban renaturation and the development of nature-based solutions to strengthen the country’s resilience to climate change. The Environment Department has started work on a long-term low-carbon strategy to guide Monaco towards carbon neutrality by 2050, while addressing the current challenges posed by climate change.
