Emmanuel Macron in July 2023 in Nouméa in New Caledonia

POLITICS – Not sure that this time he will be welcomed with flower leis. Emmanuel Macron is flying to New Caledonia this Tuesday, May 21 in the evening, announced government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot at the end of the Council of Ministers. He must install “ a mission of political dialogue”, said his Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, during questions to the government in the National Assembly.

He will exchange with all the active forces of New Caledonia » added Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, also questioned on this subject at the Palais Bourbon. But what exactly do we know about this visit?

The head of state’s entourage explained to Agence France Presse (AFP) the reasons for this surprise trip: “He goes there to listen, exchange, discuss with New Caledonian elected officials”but also “to support the Caledonians and the internal security forces who are mobilized to restore republican order”.

According to people close to Emmanuel Macron, quoted this time by the media Outremer 360°, announcements must also be made, after a dialogue with elected officials and representatives of civil society, starting with the composition of the “ assignment » desired by the Élysée. President “believes in the power of dialogue and in the ability of everyone to dialogue with each other”, insists the entourage of the head of the army, without explaining further.

25 hours of travel

The visit will take place on Thursday, given the length of the journey – around 25 hours to reach Nouméa – and the still precarious security conditions on site. “If the President of the Republic is preparing to travel so many kilometers (…) it is because he believes that his physical presence to encourage everyone to dialogue can be useful”his entourage further informed his entourage through the press.

The president will not be alone in appearing before the Caledonians. The Minister of the Interior, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu and the Minister Delegate for Overseas Territories, Marie Guévenoux, will also be on the trip, announced the Prime Minister.

Emmanuel Macron had already tried to restart the (stalled) dialogue between independentists and loyalists, via a videoconference initially planned for last Thursday. But the exchange had to be canceled and the invitation that Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was initially supposed to send to New Caledonian elected officials to come to Paris was never sent.

While many voices are being raised to ask Emmanuel Macron to reject the Congress which would ratify the thaw of the electoral body (which set the place on fire), the intentions of the Head of State in this matter remain unknown.
