Online stores continue to grow

With an increase in turnover and transactions (+5% in both cases) compared to last year, the popularity of e-commerce in Belgium clearly continues to grow. This is according to a new report from the sector federation Becom, which paints a picture of the e-commerce market in the first half of this year. Never before have so many people bought something online as in the first six months of 2024: almost every adult Belgian is now an online consumer.

The number of Belgian online stores has remained more or less stable at 63,867, but they are recording a clear increase in their turnover. The smaller online stores – the micro segment – are decreasing in number and expanding into a slightly higher segment. Small online stores are moving to the medium level. “This is a positive development, because small and medium-sized online stores account for 61% of the total number of transactions,” explains Greet Dekocker, Managing Director of Becom.
