Villarreal CF – Real Madrid: a great spectacle, certainties and doubts

This spectacular match delivered several lessons, both positive and negative, to Real Madrid, already winner of LaLiga. This draw ends a series of nine consecutive victories and allows Carlo Ancelotti to fine-tune the final adjustments two weeks before the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.

A fire attack carried by an ever more effective Arda Güler

Carletto decided to make a big turnover, five days after the “manita” inflicted by its players on Deportivo Alavés, during the 36th day of LaLiga. The Italian coach made nine changes to the starting XI, only Éder Militão and Federico Valverde were renewed.

Several Real Madrid players have benefited from this squad rotation to shine, particularly in the offensive sector. And it was Arda Güler who got the ball rolling! On a movement initiated by Luka Modrić, Dani Ceballos serves Brahim Díaz at the right tempo. On his momentum, the Spanish-Moroccan striker delivered a precise pass to Arda Güler, who opened the scoring in the fourteenth minute with a perfectly crossed shot.

Very skillful in front of goals for several weeks, Los Blancos made the break thanks to its Spanish players. Luka Modrić shifts Lucas Vázquez in the 30th minute of play, who places a perfect cross on the head of Joselu, author of his tenth goal in the league.

And the canterano, converted into a right-back, even became a scorer in the 40th minute after the yellow submarine’s score was reduced. On a placed attack, Modrić, who was in all the right shots, serves Brahim Díaz, who with a brilliant backheel, puts Lucas Vázquez into orbit, in the position of a leading attacker in the penalty area, who finishes perfectly ‘a left foot strike, sorry!

Just before half-time, Real Madrid widened the gap again, taking a three-goal lead. Once again shifted by Luka Modrić on the right, Lucas Vázquez takes advantage of the poor alignment of the opposing defense, to serve Arda Güler in the interval, inside the penalty area. The Turk finished admirably with a beautiful left-footed shot into the opposite net from Filip Jörgensen, the Swedish goalkeeper, who could only see the damage.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has scored five goals in his last four matches and is one of the main architects of the current efficiency of Real Madrid, who have scored fifteen goals in their last four matches. But on the other hand, Casa Blanca was not as effective in its penalty area

A very crumbly defense

After a series of four consecutive clean sheets in the league, Real Madrid’s defense collapsed in the Valencia suburbs and Éder Militão experienced a real nightmare against Alexander Sørloth, the Villarreal CF striker.

Adriy Lunn first delayed the deadline by making a fantastic save which diverted a heavy strike from Alexander Sørloth, launched around 25 meters, onto the post. Then the Ukrainian goalkeeper stopped a ball deflected by Éder Militão on an opposing corner, preventing the Brazilian defender from scoring against his side.

But thanks to defensive approximations, the sentence fell and Alexander Sørloth punished Real Madrid for the first time in the 39th minute. In the penalty area, Ceballos, who was served by Fran García, procrastinated and lost his duel against Yerson Mosquera. The Colombian delivers a magnificent cross with the outside of his foot to the Norwegian giant who places the ball with his head into Andriy Lunin’s goal.

The sinking of Éder Militão

Carried by the hope of finishing the championship in a qualifying place for the European Cup, which requires an imperative victory against Real Madrid, Marcelino’s players returned to the field motivated in the second half, to reverse the trend. And the lack of automatism of the central hinge, composed of Antonio Rüdiger and Éder Militão, aligned for only the second time this season, will allow Villarreal CF to turn the match around in eight minutes.

In the 48th minute of play, Gerard Moreno is shifted to the right and crosses for Alexander Sorløth, who mischievously places himself between the two central defenders of Real Madrid, to catapult a beautiful uncrossed header into the net.

In the absence of a real sentry (Aurélien Tchouaméni is injured and Carlo Ancelotti decided to leave Eduardo Camavinga and Toni Kroos on the bench.), the midfielder lacked balance and was easily pierced during the opponent’s rapid transitions, in demonstrates Villarreal CF’s third goal.

In a quick transition, Gerard Moreno, full axis, launches Alexander Sorløth deep. The 28-year-old striker hooks Éder Militão in the penalty area and finishes with a left-footed shot that Andriy Lunin cannot prevent from finishing in the cage, although he manages to touch it with his fingertips.

Driven by the goal of finishing top scorer in LaLiga, Alexander Sorløth ended up scoring a quadruple against Real Madrid, synonymous with an equalizer, which brought his total to 23 goals this season (two more than Artem Dovbyk). During a counter-attack, after a ball lost by Ceballos, Gerard Moreno is launched on the right and makes a one-two with Guedes, which allows him to deliver his third decisive pass of the game to the Norwegian number nine, who crosses his shot perfectly, taking advantage of the very approximate marking of Éder Militão, who was completely overwhelmed throughout his performance.

The former Porto defender was also replaced at the hour mark by Nacho. Competing against his Spanish teammate for a starting place in the CL final, Éder Militão has certainly lost points in the eyes of Carlo Ancelotti.

Real Madrid has come down from its clouds after several big victories and will have to mobilize, to end the season in the best possible way against Real Betis, during the 38th and last day of the championship, in order to best prepare for the final of the C1.
