Me Cheick Oumar Konare on the start of the school year: “I think it is even better to go back to school in January”

“.. I think it’s even better to go back to school in January.” This is what Mr. Cheick Oumar Konaré, lawyer and political columnist, thinks. He said it during his visit”, on October 5, 2024, on Africable Télévision on the show “Sunday Debate”.

Indeed, guest for this program, Me Cheick Oumar spoke on the postponement of the 2024-2025 school year as well as on the issues at stake in the battle of Tinzawatène, in the Kidal region, on the Algerian border. Returning to the postponement of the start of the school year, Mr. Konaré recalled that Mali experienced extraordinary floods this year that we had not seen for decades. The country, he adds, is even living under a state of national disaster. This is an extreme measure, because it has been decades since we heard about these calamities. “In other neighboring countries, there have been many deaths than in our country. Many schools are flooded, many populations have been displaced, and if you displace populations whose children were enrolled in the village school and school resumes, how will these populations bring the children to school? ? Bamako is not the only reality, otherwise for example in N’Golonina, it is not even possible to go back to school, because people have left their families for Niamana. We cannot study in these conditions. We are not asking children exiled by the disaster to return to resume classes in N’Golonina, this is not possible, unless we decide that certain schools resume and that the poor wait for the floods to end. Which is a violation of the equality of all before the law.” And to emphasize, “The measure which consists of postponing the start of the school year until November 4 seems to me to be justified by the state of national disaster. I even wonder if school can resume on November 4 because by this date, I don’t think the waters will drop enough, at least for political expediency, we decide to maintain this date. I think it would be better to start school again in January 2025.”

Also, explains Me Konaré, “Speaking of our school programs, what takes us 9 months to learn, we could teach in 3 months. I think we’re being tired for nothing. 3 months of intensive schooling are better than 9 months on programs that are useless.”
