A fire ravaged part of the buildings of the campsite located on the edge of Lake Narlay in the Jura in the town of Le Frasnois on the night of May 18 to 19, 2024.

The blackened beams meet the blue sky of this Pentecost Monday. There is nothing or almost nothing left of the building which housed a technical room, the toilets and part of the reception of the Narlay campsite. The flames surprised campers and managers in the middle of the night around two in the morning. An employee who was sleeping nearby in a caravan raised the alarm, awakened by crackling sounds.

“I went out, I saw a light. I thought the fire was controllable, it was contained. But it went away very quickly. The power of fire is incredible” explains Jérôme Foucart, campsite employee, speaking to our journalists Elea N’Guyen Van Ky and Guillaume Soudat.

220 campers were present on the site when the fire spread, releasing thick smoke in the middle of the night. They had to leave the premises the day after the disaster.

I’m sorry for all the customers who had to leave, because for them it’s a vacation that ends. There is shock, an emotional trauma also for them. Customers were the first victims of the fire.

Those who know Narlay know that this campsite is located in an area of magical beauty. Narlay, Ilay, Petit Macclu, Grand Macclu, Lake Bonlieu offer magical landscapes in emerald green colors. We think we are here in Canada, in Little Scotland, but yet in the Jura!

The sector’s clientele is made up of holidaymakers from Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Swiss, but also foreigners from Holland, England, Italy, or Belgium. And solidarity was quickly put in place after the fire at the Narlay campsite. “We have received messages of support from regulars from all over Europe who come regularly. Which pleases us, touches us and motivates us to move forward” adds Florian Negrello, campsite director

“We wanted to offer the night to our customers who were there at the time of the fire, the customers insisted on paying. Some have been coming to us for a long time, and want to collect to send us donations, that touches us” completes Jérôme Foucart.

Holidaymakers who wished to continue their stay were kindly welcomed by the Bonlieu campsite located a few kilometers away.

The Narlay campsite is now awaiting the visit of insurance experts to determine what happens next and find a temporary solution to reopen as soon as possible. Hundreds of reservations had already been taken a month before summer. We will also have to manage the situation of employees and seasonal workers who were due to start their contract in a few days.

While waiting for better days, the Narlay campsite restaurant remains open. Another way to show solidarity is to eat there in the coming weeks.
