Author of a double against Strasbourg in a victory which propelled OL into the Europa League, Alexandre Lacazette displayed his reservations regarding a possible participation in the Paris 2024 men’s football tournament with Thierry Henry’s Bleuets (24 July-August 9).

No Euro and no Olympic Games for Alexandre Lacazette? Absent from the Blues since November 14, 2017, the OL captain, still decisive against Strasbourg on Sunday evening (2-1), was never able to convince Didier Deschamps and was therefore not called up for the tournament in Germany ( June 14-July 14). The one who closed his season in the championship with a total of 19 goals (behind Kylian Mbappé’s 27) spoke about a possible participation in Paris 2024. Last April, at the microphone of Téléfoot, Gaël Clichy, deputy of Thierry Henry , had opened the door to a call-up from Lacazette, highlighting his very good season and confirming his presence in the extended list of players for the men’s football tournament. “I see that he has a lot of playing time, I see that he is decisive and above all I see that he is captain. So he is part of this list,” said the former Gunner.

“You need good preparation at my age to perform well”

Sunday evening, at the microphone of Canal+, the second top scorer in Ligue 1 – tied with Jonathan David – nevertheless displayed a considerable lack of enthusiasm regarding a possible participation in the tournament, aware of the data to be weighed. “Frankly, I don’t know if I’m a candidate for the Olympics,” thundered the one selected for the Blues 16 times. Then to explain his case: “Yes, it seems like a great adventure. When you are 33, 34 years old, you need good preparation at my age to perform well. A lot of things come into play“. Thierry Henry’s Bleuets will have three preparation matches in order to build up their pace before the tournament. They will first challenge Paraguay on July 4 in Bayonne before facing the Dominican Republic a week later in Toulon, then the Japan (July 17, still in Toulon).

Concerning the group stage of the tournament, the French Olympic team will begin its adventure on July 24 in Marseille against the United States. Subsequently, they will play against Guinea on July 27 in Nice, before concluding the group stage with a match against New Zealand on July 30 in Marseille. Thierry Henry’s list, which will call up 18 players and 4 reserves, is expected at the end of May.
