NASA has just unveiled its new space suit to return to the Moon. It will be worn by American astronauts during the mission planned for September 2026, more than 50 years after the last Apollo lunar mission. This suit is designed by the private American company Axiom. Its name: the AxEMU.

The suit has been designed with both soft and hard joints, for increased range of movement. “If you watch the Apollo videos, you’ll see that they have difficulty picking up objects from the ground and they don’t have a lot of mobility. This is why the most recent developments have focused on making a more mobile and efficient spacesuit,” explains Richard Rhodes, head of the spacesuit team at NASA.

The new prototype is planned to be more resistant to the lunar environment. “The last time we set foot on the Moon, the astronauts arrived at the Moon’s equator, close to the daylight areas, and now we will travel to the South Pole. The big challenge at the South Pole is the shadows. There’s no atmosphere and it’s very, very cold,” explains David Cohen, an engineer at NASA. The United States wants to explore the South Pole of the Moon for a very specific reason: there is water there in the form of ice, which could be exploited.
