Floods in the Pays d’Auge: a week later, the damage still visible and the anxiety still present

“Look at the disaster…”, Yvette, 80 years old, is not her first flood. But she had never seen a phenomenon of such magnitude. At the end of the day, Sunday May 12, 2024, rain and hail fell in the Pays d’Auge. Two municipalities were particularly affected: Saint-Pierre-en-Auge and Saint-Martin-de-la-Lieue.

A week after the rising waters, the scars of these floods are still clearly visible. “We lost a lot of things: the gas stove, the washing machine…”, continues the retiree. Everything is piled up in the cellar and the garden while waiting for the insurance expert to come. On the ground, the mud marks are stubborn and the water comes up in a few places in the cellar filled with humidity.

Anxiety for the future

Right in front of Yvette’s house, Bruno and Valérie saw their garden transform into a river. “Don’t walk there, it’s still waterlogged…”, indicates Valérie Fouques, deputy mayor of Hiéville. The soils are still saturated with water. Result : “it rained a lot on Friday evening, it started to flow again on our land and nearby too”, explains Bruno.

The residents are now waiting for two things, firstly for the soil to dry out a little, but also for the insurance adjuster to come and see and assess the damage.

She lost everything

You have to go a few kilometers east of Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives to understand the despair of some residents. In Boissey, the Bar de la Fontaine has been closed since May 12. Inside, everything is upside down. For an hour, a torrent of water flowed through Delphine Lechap’s establishment. Since then, the purring of the air dehumidifier has occupied the establishment, accustomed to bursts of laughter from customers.

“There, you can say that I suffered. Even if we have a lot of support and everything, we still feel somewhat alone in the process, in many things. We are happy in front of people, we have a smile, but inside, no, not at all. We feel like we’re being destroyed too, confides Delphine Lechap. And what happened when I opened the door is striking, because a projection of the force that it was, every time I talk about it, in fact, I see this image again and I have this sensation.”

The expert must spend Thursday in this bar-tobacco-restaurant. The establishment will remain closed for several months in view of the numerous damages caused to the equipment, the building and the stocks.
