Premier League: Champions League, Europa League, maintenance… the 38th day delivered its verdict

The Premier League version 2023-2024 is over. After nine months of intense competition, Manchester City were crowned champions of England this Sunday after their victory (3-1) against West Ham during a decisive 38th day. A historic success, since Pep Guardiola’s men won their fourth consecutive trophy, something no team had ever managed to do in the Premier League. But the title race was not the only issue of the afternoon, since the last European tickets were also distributed on the English lawns.

Consolation for Arsenal, consecration for Aston Villa

A small consolation for Arsenal. Winners (2-1) against Everton at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners failed a few centimeters from the top, only two points behind Manchester City in the final standings. A cruel second place which still allows the Gunners to qualify for the Champions League for the second consecutive year, which has not happened to the club since the 2015-2016, 2016-2017 sequence.

The last two tickets allocated to the Premier League for the next edition of the C1 benefit Liverpool, victorious (2-0) against Wolverhampton and Aston Villa, who heavily lost Crystal Palace (5-0). Winners of the competition in 1981-1982, the Villans will compete in the most prestigious European club competition for the first time in 41 years.

Tottenham in the Europa League, Chelsea waiting

Unlike the race for the Champions League, which had been played out since the start of the week, the fight was still raging this Sunday for the two other European competitions, the Europa League and the Europa Conference League. Opposed to the red lantern Sheffield, Tottenham did the job by winning 3-0 to finish fifth. A ranking which offers Spurs a direct ticket for the C3, they who were deprived of the European Cup this season.

On the other hand, Chelsea are on standby. Sixth thanks to their victory over Bournemouth (2-1), Mauricio Pochettino’s men will also play in the Europa League next year if Manchester City wins the FA Cup against Manchester United on May 25. If this is not the case, the Blues will participate in the Europa Conference League play-offs.

Newcastle, for their part, will return to the European Cup for the second consecutive season despite a season undermined by injuries.

As for Manchester United, they should win the FA Cup against City on May 25 in London to hope to compete in the Europa League.

No miracle for Luton

There was little hope for Luton. Eighteenth before the kick-off of this 38th day, the Petit Poucet of the Premier League was three points behind the first non-relegation, Nottingham Forrest and had to hope for an improbable miracle to secure its maintenance, such is the gap between the two teams had a big goal difference (-31 against -19). In the end, Luton lost to Fulham, while Nottingham won at Burnley. Luton, Brunley and Sheffield are therefore relegated to the Premiership.
