Which prices have fallen the most?

What about the detail? In its latest study published on May 15, the national statistics institute notes that overall food prices increase by 1.2% in April 2024, after +1.7% in March. They are thus slowing down for the thirteenth consecutive month. But certain products even show a large drop in their prices, according to the monitoring carried out each month by INSEE on the consumer price index.

So if your menu consists of homemade fried chicken fritters followed by frozen fruit salad, your meal is costing you less than last year. Indeed, since April 2023, the price index for poultry has fallen by 2.6%, frozen fruits by 12.9% and edible oils (excluding olive oil, the price of which is increasing, see below ) of 14.8%.

Frozen fish fell by 1.1%, dried fruits and nuts by 0.9%, pasta and couscous meal by 0.5%, eggs by 0.3% Fresh vegetables fell by 4.7% over one year.

Which products are seeing their prices increase?

Although these foods have seen their prices drop, the increase continues for certain products, sometimes significantly. Potatoes saw their index increase by 9.2%, chocolate by 4.5%, fruit juice by 5.5%, while frozen vegetables increased by 6.4%. The most significant increase is for olive oil, the price of which continues to soar with an increase of 32.3%.

And outside of food?

Outside of food, we also see some fairly notable variations.

Thus, the household appliance price index is down 2.6%. In particular cleaning equipment (-6.8%), toasters and grills (-9.2%) and other small household appliances (-8%).
