After the Union victory, here is what the match between Anderlecht and Bruges could change

The Union absolutely had to win this Sunday against Cercle to maintain the suspense until the last day of the championship, it’s done. But the meeting between Anderlecht and Bruges could still have consequences, here are what they are.

With this victory for the Union against Cercle de Bruges, one thing is certain: Anderlecht can no longer be champion this Sunday evening. On the other hand, the ‘Topper’ could have definitive consequences for… Bruges.

If Anderlecht wins

In the event of a victory, the Mauves would have 49 points and would simply have their fate in their hands. Brian Riemer’s men could even settle for a draw against Antwerp next weekend to secure the title.

A victory in the Topper would also put an end to Bruges’ hopes, which could no longer overtake Anderlecht in the standings. The two teams having both benefited from rounding to the next higher unit when dividing the points by two, it is the classification during the classic phase which would decide between them in the event of a tie. And in this little game, it is Anderlecht (2nd) which would pass Bruges (4th).

If Bruges wins

On the other hand, if it is the people of Bruges who win, no one would theoretically be eliminated from the title race, but Bruges would have their fate in their hands. Once again, a draw against Cercle next weekend would be enough for Bruges to win the title.

On the other hand, in the event of defeat in the Bruges derby, a victory for Union or Anderlecht would put an end to the dream of Nicky Hayen’s men. The Union not having benefited from rounding to the next higher unit, it will always go ahead of Bruges and Anderlecht in the event of a tie.

In case of a draw

If the two teams share this Sunday evening, it is ultimately Anderlecht who would keep control, for the reasons explained above. But the RSCA would then have the obligation to impose itself on Antwerp so as not to depend on the results of its competitors.

For the Union, it will be necessary to start by doing the job against Genk next Sunday and then count on a possible misstep from Anderlecht, and/or Bruges depending on the result this evening. The Apaches do not have their fate in their hands but can tell themselves that they will always have “priority” over the two teams in the event of a tie.
