“Emilia Perez” propels Jacques Audiard favorite for a 2nd Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024

The cinematographic work “Emilia Perez” benefited from a very enthusiastic reception at its screening in Cannes, thus positioning Jacques Audiard as one of the candidates of choice for the competition.

After receiving the Palme d’Or for his film “Dheepan” in 2015, Jacques Audiard could be crowned a second time thanks to “Emilia Perez”, and thus enter the restricted circle of double winners of the supreme cinema award international.

The Cannes Film Festival is fond of musicals. In 1967, the jury awarded its Grand Prize to “Les Demoiselles de Rochefort” by Jacques Demy (the Palme d’or did not yet exist) and later, in 2000, it awarded the Palme d’or to “Dancer in the Dark” by Lars von Trier. “Emilia Perez”, with Zoe Saldana (Avatar) and with music by Clément Ducol and Camille, has every chance of entering this list.

Jacques Audiard won acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival for what is considered by many to be a musical thriller. He is the architect of a scenario as violent as it is touching, where the dark world of the Parisian underworld and the personal suffering of the hero are transcended and soothed by the music, the songs and their words.

Rita (Zoe Saldana), an experienced lawyer working for a firm specializing in money laundering, longs to find true justice. This is why she decides to support Manitas, the head of a major Parisian cartel, in his fight to leave the world of hashish. The latter has a plan to get rid of his old life: reveal the woman he always knew he was, and make people believe in the death of the man he was until then.

“Emilia Perez”, the name Manitas chooses after her transformation, and which also gives its title to the film, seems touched by a special kind of magic. Thanks to the help of the musical, Jacques Audiard brilliantly enacts complete sequences and offers a montage that gives rhythm to his story in a balanced manner. The songs and their words are not action elements, they are rather the mirror of the inner feelings of the characters.

The film “Emilia Perez” not only excites with its captivating story and impeccable acting, but also with its direction. The latter, close to choreography, offers a lively rhythm which allows for universalist lyricism, but without excessive sentimentality. Audiard emphasizes empathy for his character, his inner torments and the redemption he achieves. This harmony carries a film which, although the festival is only halfway through, is already a serious contender for the Palme or the Best Director Prize. However, competition is already strong.
