Posture or deep conviction? During the press conference which followed his first defeat and the loss of his WBC belt against Oleksandr Usyk, this Saturday May 18 in Riyadh, the Englishman Tyson Fury told the journalists present that he thought he had won the fight at the outcome of the twelve rounds. However, “Gipsy King” was indeed declared defeated by split decision, two of the three judges present having declared his evening opponent victorious.

“It was a close fight, he commented. I think, I thought, that I’ve done enough, but I’m not a judge. I can’t judge a fight while I’m boxing. If someone had told me before the last round: “You’re behind, try to finish it”, I would have done it, but everyone around thought we were ahead. In the first six rounds he may have won one, and I think I won a few of the last ones as well. I’ve had a lot of wins and now I have this first loss in a close fight, with a good man like Usyk. »

“I’ll be 36 in a few months and I’ve been boxing since I was a kid. Where does it all end? »

Before leaving the ring, Tyson Fury had also implied that the judges had been moved by the Russian invasion in Ukraine, a way of saying that Usyk had “benefited” from the geopolitical context and the scope of a victory Ukrainian.

Asked about the rematch planned in their contract in October (the date of May 12 or 13 is mentioned), Fury was evasive. “I just finished one fight and I don’t want to think about another one. I’ve been training for seven months. I’m going to go home before taking stock. If there’s going to be another fight soon, in October or after, we’ll see. I don’t box because I don’t have money. I box because I love it. I’ll be 36 in a few months and I’ve been boxing since I was a kid. Where does it all end? After a hundred fights, brain damage and being in a wheelchair? I am not sure. »
