Lhe world number one Iga Swiatek won the WTA 1,000 tournament in Rome (clay/USD 5,509,771) on Saturday. The 22-year-old Pole beat Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 2) in the final in the Italian capital in straight sets (6-2, 6-3).

Swiatek thus finished the Rome tournament without losing a single set. She will approach Roland Garros next Sunday, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, as a big favorite. The Pole will try to achieve a fourth victory in the final in Paris, the third in a row.

For Swiatek, the final victory in Rome will be her 21st WTA title (in 25 finals), her third in Rome after 2021 and 2022. This year she has already been the best in Doha, Indian Wells and Madrid. In the Spanish capital, Sabalenka also found herself in the final earlier this month.

The 26-year-old Belarusian misses the opportunity to win a fifteenth WTA title (in 28 finals). She won the Australian Open in January, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Last year, the final victory in Rome went to the Kazakh Elena Rybakina (WTA 4), but she canceled her participation in this edition at the last minute.
