Cannes 2024 – Francis Ford Coppola: one month after the death of his wife, his message of hope moves the Croisette

He may be 85 years old, but the arrival of Francis Ford Coppola at the Cannes Film Festival was on everyone’s lips this Thursday, May 16, and even the next day. The legendary director presented his new film in competition, Megalopolishis twenty-sixth, after critical and popular successes like The Godfather Or Apocalypse Now for which he won the Palme d’Or in 1979 – he had received a first for Secret conversation five years earlier. For the occasion, the patriarch of the Coppola family was surrounded by part of his family.

Missing was his wife, who unfortunately died on April 12. Eleanor was 87 years old when she took her last breath at her home in Rutherford, California. To come to Cannes, Francis Ford Coppola was accompanied by his sister, Talia Shire, his son Roman – always present in the shadows –, but also his granddaughters, Romy and Cosima, daughters of Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars . At the end of the screening, the director explained that his film was dedicated to this “hope” to leave a planet in good condition to today’s children. A speech full of emotion. In the columns of The voice of the North this Saturday, May 18, he confided: “With the presentation of Megalopolis, I experienced an emotion that cannot be described in a single word. I promise you, I will still be here in 20 years. I have already started writing a new film.”

Megalopolisa film that gets people talking

Between applause and boos, Francis Ford Coppola’s film – a reflection on the society of the future – was not at all unanimously unanimous on the Croisette. The director self-financed his feature film, which allowed him to have carte blanche over his entire project, which he defined as a fable. The shooting was singled out by an article in Guardian, describing it as difficult, with technicians left to their own devices, the resignation of some key crew members and a director locked in his trailer. The filmmaker’s arrival in Cannes was not certain, barely a month after the death of his wife, director, author and documentary maker, sixty-one years after their marriage. They met on the set of the film Dementia 13. At 85 years old and despite the trials of life – he also lost a son, Gian-Carlo – Francis Ford Coppola is still passionate about the seventh art, which his films please or not.
