What is grappling, this discipline in the spotlight on Saturday for the return of Benoît Saint Denis

For his return to competition two months after his defeat in the UFC against Dustin Poirier on Saturday against Marc Diakiase (live on RMC Sport), French MMA star Benoît Saint Denis opted for grappling. A different discipline, where we do not strike but where we rely on submission.

Benoît Saint Denis varies the pleasures. After three fights in the UFC between September 2023 and March 2024, the last one ending in a defeat against Dustin Poirier, the Frenchman decided to return to grappling competition, Saturday evening at the Paris Dojo against Marc Diakiese (a fight to follow live from 8:30 p.m. on RMC Sport2).

This will not be a discovery for “BSD”, a specialist in Brazilian jiu-jitsu before starting his career in MMA, and who has therefore already participated in grappling competitions. In this discipline which brings together the different specialized wrestling practices, the fighters do not exchange blows: the objective is to submit their opponent.

A fight fell through against Tsarukyan

However, the fight starts standing and each fighter must succeed in bringing their opponent to the ground to then implement joint locks or chokes. In MMA, Benoît Saint Denis has often used his wrestling skills to win by submission (9 times in 13 victories, including 2 times in the UFC).

Lining up in a grappling fight, for the Frenchman, is a way to return to competition and work on his level on the ground while avoiding taking blows to the head, which can prove particularly traumatic.

Initially, the fight was announced against Arman Tsarukyan. But the Armenian did not obtain the agreement of the UFC and the confrontation fell through, giving rise to exchanges of messages on social networks. Finally, “BSD” finds itself opposed to the British Marc Diakiese, also an MMA fighter, who has 17 victories and 7 defeats.
