During the Board of Directors of the National Council for Consultation and Cooperation of Rural People (CNCR), the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock, Mabouba Diagne, announced this Friday, May 17, 2024, a significant reduction fertilizer prices for the 2024-2025 agricultural season. “The CNCR played a very active role in the preparations and in the analysis of the selection of fertilizer suppliers, which allowed us to reduce the price of fertilizers this year by more than 22% and by 19% for the sector tomato,” said Mabouba Diagne.

Senego’s analysis of comparative price tables from last year and this year shows a notable difference in the costs of fertilizers available and sold in Senegal. Circular No. 00582/MASAE/DA, issued on May 14, 2024, sets the new prices of subsidized mineral fertilizers for the 2024/2025 agricultural season. Here are some examples of the new prices:

  • Fertilizer formula 6 20 10: 6,500 FCFA per bag (compared to 8,000 FCFA the previous year).
  • Fertilizer formula 15 15 15: 9,500 FCFA per bag (compared to 11,000 FCFA the previous year).
  • Fertilizer formula 9 23 30: 12,500 FCFA per bag (compared to 13,000 FCFA the previous year).

These reductions show a drop of more than 22% compared to the previous year, reflected by supplier prices and subsidy rates revised upwards to improve producers’ access to these essential inputs.

In 2023, fertilizer prices were higher, as indicated in circular No. 1153/MAERSA/DA of June 12, 2023, with for example:

  • Fertilizer formula 6 20 10: 8,000 FCFA per bag.
  • Fertilizer formula 15 15 15: 11,000 FCFA per bag.
  • Formula 9 23 30 fertilizer: 13,000 FCFA per bag.

The subsidy strategy made fertilizer prices more accessible, with subsidies of up to 61.19% for certain formulas in 2024, compared to lower subsidy rates in 2023.
