According to the latest data from the National Agricultural Observatory (Onagri), the average producer price of broiler chicken increased by 5% in one year, reaching 6.98 dinars per kilogram in September 2024.
The increase in prices, which is part of an underlying trend, can be explained by several factors: the increase in the cost of livestock feed, the rise in energy prices and the growing demand for white meat, considered healthier. .
Unlike chicken, the price of eggs saw a significant drop of 17.4% over one year. In September 2024, an egg was traded on average at 274 thousandths of a dinar, a drop of almost 20% compared to the same period the previous year. This drop is explained in particular by greater production and less sustained demand.
This price change risks having consequences for Tunisian consumers, already faced with galloping inflation. Chicken, which is an important source of protein in the Tunisian diet, could become less accessible for certain categories of the population.
For poultry producers, this price increase is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it allows them to offset part of their production costs. On the other hand, it risks reducing consumption and therefore their income in the long term.
