“I didn’t want it to end”: Meryl Streep talks about the intimate scene she preferred to play

Returning to the Cannes Film Festival 35 years after her last appearance, Meryl Streep was honored with an Honorary Palm, offered with emotion by Juliette Binoche.

The next day, Wednesday May 15, 2024, the 74-year-old actress was at the Théâtre Debussy where she conducted an interview without discretion.

Meryl Streep remembers her most beautiful intimate scene

During a conversation with journalist Didier Allouch, relayed by the Hollywood Reporter, Meryl Streep returned in detail to her long career and the different experiences she had with the filmmakers and actors she met. The actress cites in particular an intimate scene that she particularly enjoyed filming.

Meryl Streep returned to the famous shampoo scene in Out of Africa (1985) in which Robert Redford washes her hair in the wilderness. If the moment does not consist of a nude, it exuded a sensuality and an intimate sweetness that the star of Mamma Mia never forgot.

“We’ve seen so many scenes where people are fucking, but we don’t see that loving touch,” she says. She then slips, making the rest of her imagination clear: “I didn’t want it to end this way“.

Doubts before filming

During this Cannes interview, Meryl Streep also revealed her doubts and apprehensions within her work.

She notably admitted that she was often nervous before her first day on set. “The night before, I used to say to my husband, ‘I don’t know how to do this,'” she says.

However, stress did not prevent her from appearing in numerous successful films. There, Meryl Streep evokes the chance of her presence. “I wasn’t aiming to make a blockbuster“, she insisted.

Regarding Mamma Mia (2008) and The devil wears Prada (2006), the triumph was actually a surprise. The actress was approaching sixty at the time. “I never thought they were going to be anything other than fun and I didn’t know how big they would be,” she confides. A happy miscalculation.
