The CNESST unveils an investigation report into an accident that occurred in Sainte-Aurélie

The Commission for Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) made public, this Wednesday, the conclusions of its investigation into the work accident that caused injuries to a mechanic at the company Soudure MT inc., which occurred on September 6, 2023, in Sainte-Aurélie.

This document first recalls the chronology of events. “ On the day of the accident, the worker was assigned to the planing plant of the company Les Produits Forestiers D&G ltée. While he was operating a stacker, a piece of wood got stuck under the structure of the elevator, preventing its descent. To unblock, the worker accessed the protective enclosure after closing the stacker’s electrical disconnectors, without however ensuring that the energies of all the equipment present were controlled. He was thus exposed to all the dangerous areas located in the enclosure, including the moving part of the elevator. As the worker cut the piece of wood, the elevator suddenly collapsed under the influence of gravity and crushed him. Emergency services were called to the scene, and the worker was transported to a hospital. »

It is mentioned that the investigation allowed the CNESST to identify two causes to explain the accident. First, the piece of wood stuck under the stacker, which caused the elevator to get stuck in the high position and which collapsed under gravity and crushed the worker when he unblocked it. Additionally, the unblocking method used by the worker put him at risk of crushing due to the presence of uncontrolled gravitational energy.

Following this accident, the CNESST prohibited the handling of stackers and access under the elevators at the Les Produits Forestiers D&G ltée planing plant until they were secured with an isolation and padlocking device. .
