Author of a monstrous 2019/2020 season, during which he won six trophies with Bayern Munich (including the Champions League) and scored 55 goals in 47 matches, the Pole Robert Lewandowski, today at FC Barcelona, could finally be rewarded at its true value.
According to the Spanish newspaper Sport, the French magazine France Football, which honors the best footballer of the year with the Ballon d’Or, would consider rewarding the Pole retroactively, by awarding him the trophy for the 2020 edition. Due of the Covid pandemic, the ceremony was canceled and the Ballon d’or was not awarded that year. Twelve months later, in 2021, Lewandowski finished 2nd in the Ballon d’Or rankings, behind Argentinian Lionel Messi.
“Of course, I would have liked to receive the Ballon d’Or one day. Let’s put it this way: if I received it four years later, I wouldn’t be offended. It would be a great honor and I would accept the award,” the 35-year-old Pole recently said in an interview with Sport Bild. In 2020, Lewandowski received The Best trophy, awarded by FIFA to the best player of the season. He was also honored by UEFA as best player and best striker of the year 2020.
