Murder of a Korean in Pattaya: another suspect arrested in Cambodia

SEOUL, May 14 — A South Korean man has been arrested in Cambodia for his alleged involvement in the murder of a South Korean tourist in Thailand, officials said Tuesday. The suspect, aged 27, was arrested at an accommodation in Phnom Penh around midnight following a report that a South Korean suspected of being involved in the affair was seen in this city.

Police were seeking to locate him after confirming he had fled to Cambodia. He is believed to be one of three South Koreans suspected of being responsible for the kidnapping and murder of a 34-year-old South Korean while he was on vacation in Pattaya.

Last weekend, Thai police discovered the victim’s body in a plastic container filled with cement that had been dumped in a reservoir in Pattaya after the victim’s mother was warned by an unidentified man that She had to pay a ransom if she didn’t want her son to be killed, according to local media and the South Korean embassy in Thailand.

South Korean police plan to discuss extradition of the suspect, currently in custody, with Cambodian police. Furthermore, the police are still looking for the last suspect in this case who is said to have fled from Thailand to a neighboring country. On Sunday, police arrested one of the suspects in the case in Jeongeup, southwest South Korea. Police have requested an arrest warrant for involuntary complicity in a homicide case as he denies any involvement in the case.
