The defendant lost control of his 510hp vehicle near the Somme-Leuze viaduct, on the N63. According to an expert dispatched to the scene, he was traveling at a speed of between 200 and 240 km/h. His vehicle took off when it passed over the bridge’s expansion joint. After hitting the central berm, he rolled several times. His wife, who was in the passenger seat, was ejected and died.

According to the expert, she was ejected because her seat belt was not on correctly. “We were going to a wedding and we were late. I wanted to try to make up some time,” the driver explained in court. The defense considered the malicious obstruction not established. If the defendant was indeed driving at excessive speed, he did not want to disturb other road users, she argued.
