A person died by gunshot during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday in Nouméa during the riots which have shaken the New Caledonia archipelago since Monday, announced the High Commissioner of the Republic, Louis Le Franc.

Of the three injured admitted to the emergency room, one died, the victim of a gunshot. Not from a police or gendarmerie shot, but from someone who certainly wanted to defend themselves“, declared the state representative to the press, without further details on the circumstances of his death.

I’ll let you imagine what will happen if militias start shooting at armed people“, continued Louis Le Franc, deploring a situation that he described as “insurrectional” in the archipelago.

The time must be for appeasement (…) the call for calm is imperative“, insisted the state representative.

The High Commissioner also reported several “exchanges of buckshot between rioters and civil defense groups in Nouméa and Paita“and a”attempted intrusion into the brigade (gendarmerie) of Saint-Michel“.

The police carried out a total of 140 arrests in the urban area of ​​Nouméa alone, according to a new report drawn up by Louis Le Franc.
