International Museum Day, organized on May 18, will have as its theme this year “Museums, education and research”, announced the International Council of Museums on Tuesday. A host of activities will be offered in all the Walloon provinces and in Brussels.

This event, initiated in 1977, aims to raise awareness among civil society of the fact that “museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures, development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace between peoples”, specifies Icom on its website.
Around fifteen institutions will participate in the 2024 edition in Belgium. Among them, the photography museum in Charleroi will invite lovers of glossy images to enter a darkroom to create photographs from their negatives. Train World in Brussels will invite the public to a conference on “The era of radio trains” and a literary stroll, in the footsteps of poets and writers Victor Hugo, Jean de La Fontaine and Alfred de Vigny. As for the Musée L in Louvain-la-Neuve, it will offer the opportunity to discover the“Arctic in transition”throughout an exhibition retracing the developments of this distant land throughout the seasons.
Some activities will extend over several days.
Last year, more than 37,000 museums took part in the event in nearly 156 countries.
