She arrived a little day early. After the launch of TF1+ at the beginning of January, M6 is responding and launching its free streaming platform called… M6+ this Tuesday, May 14, with the ambition to chase down paid giants like Netflix.

The advertising campaign which accompanies this launch also attacks paying competitors head-on, under the slogan “Stream. Save. » She highlights the free M6+ compared to the prices of Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+ and Apple TV (from 5.99 to 9.99 euros per month depending on the case).

More than 300 films and 300 series

M6+ replaced the group’s previous platform, 6Play. It promises a range of programs “multiplied by two”, with “30,000 hours available during the year”.

Besides Love is in the meadow, Top chef and other in-house programs, M6+ offers more than 300 films, 300 series like Lois and Clark or 4,000 hours of reality TV, all available for a minimum of 30 days.

Reality TV is a particularly popular genre on Avod (free streaming financed by advertising). To achieve a double blow, M6+ will offer a reality TV show dedicated to MMA, a combat sport in full expansion particularly among young people, The MMA Academy.

The urgency of taking the turn towards streaming

Like its rival TF1+, M6+ is free and includes advertising, but is available in a paid version (4.99 euros/month) without advertising.

Streaming is a strategic issue for channels, as young people turn away from traditional TV in favor of social networks and platforms. A new one will also arrive in France in June, the American Max, merger of HBO Max and Discovery+.

Switching to streaming requires large investments, particularly technological ones. They led to a 2.6% decline in the M6 ​​group’s current operating profit in the first quarter, to 57.9 million euros.

But faced with these challenges, the group can rely on its ability to make money, since it is the most profitable in the French audiovisual landscape and has earned 1.3 billion euros in turnover the year before. last year, including a billion in advertising revenue.

It is now led by David Larramendy, who replaced the emblematic Nicolas de Tavernost at the end of April.
