the essential
Founding member of the long distance and long distance section of the UAT, Michel Piquer, runner in 68 marathons, today a volunteer pillar of the city’s sporting events, will have the honor of carrying the Olympic flame.

Humble by nature, Michel Piquer is not a man and a volunteer to put himself forward and raise his neck. But when the town hall’s sports department contacted him to offer him the chance to become a bearer of the Olympic flame, he couldn’t help but feel “great pride in my community involvement, my family, my club, the Tarbes Pyrénées Athletics (TPA)” of which he was one of the founding members in 1986, and all the volunteers of the associative movement.

“My dream was to participate in the New York marathon”

“Carrying the Olympic flame is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For my 90-year-old mother, it looks like I’m going to be an Olympic champion,” admits the man who started running outside stadiums in 1980, when she was only in its infancy in the region and even in France.

With a group of relentless, slightly crazy pioneers, he was at the origin of the creation of the long distance and long distance section of the UAT which would later become the TPA.

“My beginner’s dream was to participate in the New York marathon. I did it for the first time in 1985, before returning three times and running 68 marathons in total, all over the world. the world, in Chicago, in Berlin, in Ireland, in Barcelona, in Paris and even 18 times the legendary Médoc marathon” confesses the one who has always been driven by “the passion for sport” and in particular for what we call running today.

“Passion is what helps us best to live. Running has allowed me to meet people from all social classes and all backgrounds, and also to travel and discover many things “.

An outstanding organizer

Over the years, the runner has become a passionate volunteer within the TPA and the municipal sports office of the city of Tarbes, of which he is one of the active members, to provide his cornerstone to the organization. of the biggest sporting events in the city: the Tarb’elles for the benefit of the fight against cancer as part of Pink October, the Urban Trail and the cross-country race in the city of Tarbes, the Lourdes-Tarbes half-marathon and the 10 km of La Méridienne.

Even if his modesty suffered, his involvement and sense of organization were unanimous. The flame of the Olympic dream has already been burning within him for almost half a century, which he will proudly carry, rue du Régiment de Bigorre, with the Olympic medalist basketball player Isabelle Yacoubou, who, by happy coincidence, is his neighbor in Laloubère.
