But why does the A14 cost so much? “The GPS took me there and I said to myself “ah no, not that one””, regrets Vadim, met in a service station in Yvelines (78). Alternative route required for weeks, after the closure of the A13 on April 18 due to cracks, the A14 motorway is expensive. Very expensive, for only around twenty kilometers. €10.60 during peak hours, around €6 during off-peak hours. Or around 48 cents per kilometer when most French motorway sections average around 15 cents per kilometer.

This move to the dissuasive toll even aroused the discontent of many elected politicians, such as Valérie Pécresse, the president of the Region, who demanded that this motorway be free during the work on the A13. At the end of April, they finally got the state to cover half the cost of the trip for carpoolers during peak hours.

When asked, most motorists remain doubtful about the stratospheric cost of their route. Florence hesitates: “It’s because of the Olympics”, “It’s the State which is itching”, assures Marwane. “Ah is it the tunnel that is very long? “, says another driver.

To understand the very high price of this motorway opened in November 1996, we must delve into the genesis of a section which took more than 30 years to see the light of day in a dense and wooded urban area. A story of a viaduct stretched towards the void for 20 years, of environmental protests in the 90s and of costs multiplying over the years.
